On May 17, 1995, the 14th Dalai Lama recognized a young 6 year old boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, as the 11th Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual leader in Tibet. Just 3 days later, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family were abducted by Chinese authorities and have been missing ever since. Tibetans and leaders around the world lobby for and await their release. The original Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was founded in 1447 in Shigatse, Tibet; it became the traditional monastic seat of successive Panchen Lamas. In 1972, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was reestablished and rebuilt in Bylakuppe, India, by the Tibetan population in exile in honor of and awaiting the arrival of its still-missing spiritual leader, the 11th Panchen Lama.
