Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhist monks, with the overwhelming majority of these monks living in Southeast Asian countries. Making the alms round permits the monks to practice poverty and humility, to overcome vanity. They also learn acceptance, since they are completely dependent upon what was offered, eating only what is put in the bowl, and only once a day. By bringing monks food each day, the faithful are investing in the faith, and in doing so, they too make merit to nourish their own souls. Begging helps the monks cut pride and become humble, and, simultaneously, the givers gain good karma. This Giving Tuesday, we are offering you the opportunity to honor this profound tradition by contributing to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery Food Fund. Although the monks at the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery do not use alms bowls in requesting help, they rely on donations like ours to provide their basic daily needs and fulfill their promise to build a compassionate world!
