Celebrate Lhabab Duchen, The Festival of the Descent from Heaven

A Day When Positive and Negative Actions Are Multiplied 10 Million Times in Their Spiritual Power

Lhabab Duchen, November 4, 2023, is one of four important holidays in Tibetan Buddhism. It celebrates the Buddha’s return to Earth from the God Realm of the Thirty-Three, where he went to teach the Dharma to the gods, including his mother, Mayadevi, who died shortly after his birth and was reborn in that realm. His teachings repaid his mother’s kindness and liberated her from samsara. The Buddha returned after his disciple Maudgalyayana begged him to continue his teachings on Earth.

Generating Merit

By reciting mantras and prayers and engaging in virtuous acts, you can greatly increase your merit. Another way is the powerful act of dana, which means “generosity” in Buddhism. Now is a great opportunity to practice the virtuous deed of giving by donating to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery Food Fund. Proceeds will feed over 400 monks who work hard in providing spiritual sustenance toward all of humanity. We hope you remember the monks who will be performing pujas throughout the day. Pujas are ceremonies of chanting, praying, and making offerings to celebrate the  Buddha's life, his deeds, and teachings.

What Is a Consecrated Statue, and Why Is It Special?

A statue is consecrated to bring it to life. To consecrate a statue, the monks proceed with an involved filling process, followed by a consecration ceremony. The statue is filled with special herbs and prayer rolls completely covered by mantras. Each part of the statue has different prayer rolls, for the head, for the heart, and so on. During the auspicious day of consecration, the statues are prayed over and blessed many, many times by high lamas for many consecutive days. It's a powerful refuge that provides peace and tranquility to the recipient. Our golden Buddha statues were consecrated at the monastery during our 2023 Losar retreat.
