Happy Losar 2026 from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery!

Losar, the Tibetan New Year, is the most significant 15-day festival in Tibetan Buddhism. It is observed in Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and India, with 2026 celebrations beginning around late February. It is a time for purifying the home, family reunions, honoring deities with prayers, offerings, and wearing new clothes for the new year.

Losar Celebrations

  • Significance: It marks the start of the lunar new year, often involving a 3-day core celebration with 15 days of festivities total.

  • Preparations: Homes are thoroughly cleaned to remove bad luck from the previous year, and special food like Guthuk (a 9-ingredient soup) is eaten.

  • Activities: People visit monasteries, light butter lamps, hang new prayer flags, exchange greetings, and enjoy traditional music and dance.

  • Rituals: Rituals include purifying the home, offering Chemar (barley/tsampa) for abundance, and, on the second day, viewing Cham (masked) dances.

  • Meaning: "Losar" means "new year". "Happy Losar" is often expressed as Losar Tashi Delek (Good luck/blessings for the New Year).

Why Making Prayer Requests or Offerings During Losar Is Considered Auspicious and Powerful

Losar marks the turning point of a calendar - it's a moment of renewal, intention and karmic reset. In Tibetan Buddhism, this threshold between old and new is considered especially powerful, which is why making offerings during Losar is viewed as deeply auspicious.

Consider Making Offerings

You are warmly invited to make prayer offerings to a loved one who needs the extra help. The monks at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery will perform a special Puja dedicated to your loved one. This is a precious offering and a meaningful way to cultivate blessings, healing, and positive energy in their life. Whether near or far, these offerings made with sincerity and compassion, can help generate merit and support the well-being of the person you hold in your heart.

Offer prayers for a loved one with compassion and intention.
